The Grammys is an annual event that highlights the musical accomplishments of artists from the previous year. This year there were many fashion statements made and many unique individual performances. Focusing on the performances, we saw different entertaining acts by Chappell Roan, Benson Boone, and Sabrina Carpenter.
The first Grammy awards were presented in 1958 in Beverly Hills, California. Winners are chosen from over 25 categories which include pop, rock, rap, R&B, country, and more. Since 2000, the Grammys have been held at the Crypto.com Arena. Ella Fitzgerald won the first ever Grammy for Best Jazz Performance.
Chappell Roan, a national sensation, most known for her song “HOT TO GO.” For her first ever performance she played her hit song “Pink Pony Club” with dancers dressed as cowboys to go along with the “pony” theme along with a huge pink pony on the stage. She was wearing a rodeo themed bodysuit. Her song got the crowd up, dancing, and singing along. When asked what she thought of the performance, Avery Martin said, “I loved the design and the story telling that was present in her performance.” Roan used her acceptance speech to voice her thoughts on the mistreatment of music artists in the industry in hopes to bring awareness to it. She talked about how they don’t get fair pay and how it has affected her life. Roan was asking for a liveable wage and better healthcare, specifically for developing artists. Roan says, “Labels, we got you, but do you got us?”.
Benson Boone, most known for his recent popular single “Beautiful Things”, played that song for his first ever Grammys performance, and had a tear away suit under his shimmery light blue outfit. Boone originally gained success after he finished American Idol. He has been in the music industry since 2021. His performance started in the audience and he made his way up to the stage to continue his performance. When asked about her opinion on Boones performance, Martin said, “I didn’t like it … he was just sparkly and flippy and that was all he had going.”
Sabrina Carpenter, an artist who has been in the music industry for a decade, recently struck popularity after she released her recent album “Short n’ Sweet”. She attended the event with her older sister, Sarah. Carpenter performed a mashup with her two chart topper singles “Please Please Please” and “Espresso” for her first ever Grammys performance. The stage acted as a set with different scenes. Carpenter started off in a Black suit and tie dress and ended in a blue bedazzled bodysuit to go along with the theme of her album. After asking her opinion on Carpenter’s performance, Martin said, “she like played into the performance aspect … I thought it was very cute with like the outfit changes and everything.”
Critics say that the Grammys delivered just what it needed to and that there was something for everyone. Billboard ranked all 16 performances individually, with Chappell Roans in 3rd place, Sabrina Carpenters in 4th place, and Benson Boone in 9th place. Many critics have had good thoughts on Chappell Roans acceptance speech and how they think she is courageous for it.
The new artists that won over the media this year with their chart topping songs, will have viewers wondering when the next new artist will join the scene and what they will bring to the industry.
