With the 2024 football season having come and gone, the Huskies’ last game marked the end of marching band season as well. During halftime at every home game, the Harlem marching band would take to the field and perform an assortment of different pieces, including the National Anthem, and the official Harlem school song. Although just another season finale for freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in band, October 25th marked the last marching band game for the seniors.
“It’s bittersweet,” says Mr. Tim Perian, band director and teacher. “It’s kind of special, because it’s the last time they get to do this.”
Certain seniors, like Chase Wright, have been active in Harlem’s marching band all four years of their high school career. Much like a sport, marching band has played a major role in many young musicians’ lives.
Wright said, “Marching band has given me a small community that I am able to interact with, and provided me with a lot of friendships that have lasted.” Marching band a community where students who are involved have reaped the benefits of a tight-knit group of their classmates. Countless hours of rehearsals and practice have contributed to the students’ bond.
Despite the Huskies losing the football game on October 25, the night was a perfect sendoff for the Marching Band Seniors. Even underclassmen, such as sophomore Cadence Johnson, reminisce on their last game with seniors.
“It’s like, there’s no way this is the last time,” Johnson remarked following the game’s conclusion.
“I don’t regret anything at all” said Wright, “It was sad, knowing that I was going up to the line for the last time, and after that night, I wouldn’t step there again, but I was determined to put everything on the field, no matter what happened.”
Regardless of the fact senior’s have finished their final season of marching band, they can look hopefully to next year, watching their younger classmates carry on the torch and have an even better season.
